The Bosun

The Bosun's Role:

The Bosun is supervised by the Chief Officer to perform responsibilities as specified.

On board Mega Yachts the bosun reports to the Chief Officer & 2nd Officer.

A bosun’s responsibilities are to;

1. perform bridge watches at sea.

2. assist the 2nd Officer with deck department operations.

3. to supervise the deck crew in the execution of deck operations & maintenance.


Certifications & Experience:

Officer of Watch certification for larger yachts over 500GT eg. greater than 50 metres approx.

For vessels less than 50 metres, a Master 200GT/ 500GT Mates certification with at least two years experience.

Also required;

Radio GMDSS ROC or GOC.

STCW Safety Courses Basic & Advanced.

Medical Certificate ENG1 or equivalent of.

The Key Points:

In co-operation with the 2nd Officer, organise & run the deck department.

Assist the 2nd Officer in allocating daily work duties for deck crew & maintain a periodical maintenance schedule.

Assist the 2nd Officer in motivating, training, evaluation & direction.



Maintain the cleanliness of the deck department’s areas & the tenders.

Regular updating of the deck department computerised inventory.

Assist the Leading Hand with deck stores distribution & control.

Have an in depth knowledge of the paint systems & deck products used.

Have relevant knowledge of the relevant parts of the ship’s ISM Safety Management System (SMS).

Monitor the condition of the ship’s fire & safety equipment.

Familiarize him/herself to the ship’s emergency procedures, fire & safety equipment & in particular to own assigned duties.
